Purpose of role

Working within the risk appetite defined by the relevant Boards, as the Risk Manager you will work pro-actively with the Retail areas to promote best practice with the aim or reducing risks as defined within the Group’s Risk Taxonomy.

You will support the implementation of the Enterprise risk framework across the Retail business areas, with the development and provision of support to business developments and the ongoing analysis of operational risk.

You will also support other Group Risk team members in coordinating the operational risk scenario process in support of the Group’s Internal Model and overseeing the operation of the Group’s risk management database (SWORD).

As the Risk Manager, Retail you will provide Risk oversight to the Sunrise Programme through the provision of comprehensive support and challenge in respect of the operational and regulatory risk aspects within planning, transformation, migration and operationalising of the programme.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide consultancy support and Risk expertise to assist the Sunrise Programme in achieving its objectives. Ensuring compliance with Enterprise Risk Management Framework, current legislation, regulation and best practice highlighting any risk opportunities and threats relating to the business change.

  • To identify, monitor and challenge key operational and regulatory risks, issues and activities so as to enable Retail’s operational risks to be appropriately understood and mitigated.

  • To engage and refer wider Risk colleagues where specialist Risk support and oversight is required within programme initiatives

  • You will be responsible for providing pro-active operational risk advice, support and challenge to 1st Line management across the business, including oversight of the management of risks associated with change initiatives.

  • You will support the delivery of the Group’s Internal Model for Operational Risk through the supporting output of operational risk scenarios with risk owners and other key stakeholders.

  • You will ensure that you and the business partners that you support are proficient in the use of the Group’s risk management system of record and in supporting the business in the identification, assessment and reporting of risks at departmental level.

  • When needed, you will engage with the risk management system of record suppliers and ensure that you are sufficiently aware of its functionality to propose and oversee improvements as required.

  • You will take responsibility for ensuring you comply with the company’s procedures, policies, guidelines and reporting requirements as well as any relevant regulatory and statutory requirements.

What we’re looking for

  • Proven track record of practical experience of implementing and/ or operating risk management processes.

  • Breadth of experience and knowledge of UK regulated financial services. Strong life and pensions experience is preferred

  • Experience of risk support in change and implementation of large transformation initiatives.

  • Proven record of building strong internal partnerships within businesses.  

  • Experience of implementing BoE regulatory requirements for operational risk is desirable but not essential.

  • Excellent relationship management skills and knowledge.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including influencing, negotiation, presentation and report writing.

  • Strong understanding of risk management practices and their application, including operational risk. Ability to identify emerging risk issues and to drive understanding and management.

  • Good understanding of regulatory context for operation of risk management, including Solvency 2 requirements, FCA and PRA expectations.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking ability, able to interpret information from a number of sources and draw together the ‘big picture’ and bring a strategic perspective.
